About Us ...

The Acadêmicos da Ópera Samba School is a group of about two or three dozen performers who love Brazilian music and dance. We play all kinds of music from Brazil ... but we focus on samba. Click the links below to take a listen (.mp3):

Historically the most popular of all the Brazilian rhythms, samba is played very fast with a powerful drive. You simply cannot sit still when you hear samba. Sambas are traditionally performed in Brazil by neighborhood Samba Schools (escolas de samba), many of which perform in the famous Sambadrome in Rio de Janeiro during the pre-lenten Brazilian Carnaval.

Acadêmicos da Ópera was created and is led by Robert Patterson (Jacaré). A perennial Brazilian music student, Jacaré has spent countless hours studying and playing with many Brazilian musicians, and travels yearly to Brazil in order to stay on top of all things samba (you can find a link to his TravelBlog on our Links Page). He also makes a yearly pilgrimage to the annual California Brazil Camp as part of the faculty.

Listen to Jacaré every Saturday morning on 91.7 FM KRTU's Cafezinho do Brasil in San Antonio, Texas (live webcast available).
